One Reason To Audit Your Market Portfolio Regardless Of Having a Broker – Identical Codes For Different Identities In Different Exchanges Can Be Incidentally versus Intentionally Used To Mislead An Investor Into Being Broke…again…and again…and again.

Borrowing from a piece of artwork born on American culture yet again, the movie “Independence Day” brought forth a great deal of opportunity to dawdle and daydream about how a viewer might react if a life form was to descend from above in a very clear and visible manner while having already begun operating from within our data so invisibly for long enough of a time period, it was the fate of one of the lead characters to happenstance ride his bicycle through a cable network’s office space to start the stopwatch towards some of the most spectacular cinematography of its time.

But even with 3-D movies hitting the screens, it is a particular series of lines from the movie that continues to stand out in my mind as a crutch to substitute for my own lack of surprise over a variety of discoveries I have made over the past few years.  Many of the main characters are on their way to go view one of the aliens that had crashed to Earth decades earlier and it is within Judd Hirsch’s performance I find temporary solace in not desiring to yell at someone with the same statement of “You knew back then and you did nothing!”

It is not within the paternal structure that my comfort levels can fertilize themselves, rather it is within the idea that someone would not hesitate to unleash passionate clarity of how exactly they had gotten to that particular moment in the script, of which the sales pitch was the timeless claim of plausible deniability being the exercise equipment while they were practicing the right to remain silent and uh-oh!  “The” President of the United States?  Not that!

Back in the 1800’s when the telegraph system was first taking off, whether or not the existence of a Master Code Book For Telegraph Communications was widely known or not makes it an interesting glimpse point into what someone could have done if they had in their possession the actual code book relative to a translator turning a message into the prescribed character counts and patterns needed to keep the signals at their most minimum, the equation Time=Money kept telegraphs out of the hands of the masses and in the hands of those who were not only able to afford to send such messages, but that such messages frequently carried forth instructions for the person receiving the cable to follow.

I don’t know about any other country and their own experiences with this method of communications, but I do recollect a few legal cases in which a telegraph company was being held liable for a communication that resulted in a major loss by the sender in the business context.  Regardless of these past outcomes, it still remains a flawed illusion that telecommunications companies are somehow entirely untouchable when it comes to their claimed messenger status, but it isn’t the telecommunications companies who come across as untouchable in this Identifier Era (not to be confused with the Industrial Revolution or the sounds from the still booming and banging of a generation with a variety of musical evolutions being caught up within this particular group).

When a bank makes an error in your bank account, the bank is certainly responsible for correcting the error, but with zero incentive to promptly and properly reverse such a literal line item entry into both their books and the books of the bank account holder, even a 3 day holding period can eventually cascade upwards into the larger spreadsheet summaries with rippling benefits for the banks to further play with the spreads in the additional financial marketplaces dealing with short-term-related capitalization, including but not limited to the entry of a 1 or 2 day float to a corporation in the millions, which provides the bank with almost immediate intimate knowledge of the transaction all the way to this idea that the short-term loans being issued to bank account holders with the product name of Overdraft Protection defeats the obligation of the bank to protect its assets from these types of gambler that can end up gouging out chunks of a bank’s balance sheet and then have additional extrapolation performed on the data so that the percentage of users of the OP feature perceived to be “toxic” relative to any other conversion measure that other industries provide the additional labeling, such as a homeowner accessing the OP feature relative to a renter accessing the OP feature.

With so much of this type of knowledge being that of an already-public nature, it is within the choice of any exchange adopting a ticker symbol that coincides with an existing symbol on a different exchange that brings together issues already faced even before the 1800’s in terms of codification rules.  Any stock exchange wanting credibility and a certain level of certification cannot afford to duplicate its ticker symbols within its roster, otherwise there is no wall protecting the purchasers and the sellers from buying and selling the opposite stock of what the purchaser or seller wanted sold.  Can you image the messages if there was a rush driven by such an impression?  “I told you to buy 10 million of this, not 10 million of that!”

So the idea that I have somehow stumbled upon some sort of oddity never before framed quite like this is quite preposterous, especially when books like “13 Bankers – The Wall Street Takeover and the Next Financial MeltDown” by Simon Johnson and James Kwak were around in 2010 and “Take On the Street – What Wall Street and Corporate America Don’t Want You to Know – What You Can Do to Fight Back” by Arthur Levitt with Paula Dwyer are in circulation, along with hundreds of textbooks and thousands of other books and manuals.

And with my irritation certainly colored by having no reasonable method to establish which exchange came first with a particular ticker symbol (although 1st come, 1st serve is convenient, I think such boundaries can only be established and sustained through cooperation within the various exchanges in which such cooperation can only be driven by a marketplace willing to reject a duplicate symbol to be assigned to their company), knowing such curiosity is not a standard part of the conversation between a broker and their client…ESPECIALLY WHEN IT COMES TO INDIVIDUAL INVESTORS PURCHASING STOCKS VIA ONE OF THE ONLINE SERVICES!

Just as banks can withdraw money from an account different than what the requestor requested, it is no longer on the shoulders of brokers alone to ensure proper application of a ticker symbol is applied in a variety of positions during the duration of the transaction (buy/hold/sell can be done in a matter of minutes or months, with the buy and sell actions being the start and stop instructions of a contractual promise) AND DUPLICATE TICKER SYMBOLS CARRIED WITHIN DIFFERENT EXCHANGES PROVIDE UNACCEPTABLE LEVELS OF NOISE TRADING BETWEEN THE DUPLICATES AND THE STRING DERIVATIVE MARKETPLACE.

Sorry for the all caps for a few sentences, but as I said earlier, I don’t feel that emoting a similar degree of frustration parallel to a piece of fictional performance, but perhaps if I was to close on these two chunks of statement provided by the 13 Banksters book:

“Noise trading can lead to a large divergence between market prices and fundamental values” from “Over The Counter Derivatives Markets and the Commodity Exchange Act,” Report of the President’s Working Group on Financial Markets, November 1999 www.ustreas.gov/press/releases/reports/otcact.pdf

And

“Impossible to differentiate between noise and information and hence impossible to differentiate between noise and information and hence impossible to determine who was a noise trader and who was an information trader.  Consequently, prices could wander far away from fundamental values for indefinite periods of time”   Quoted from Fischer Black during a 1985 meeting of the American Finance Association. 

Black is one of the individuals who’s theorems are used to value some aspect of a company on the stock exchanges.

Mary Meeks comes across as a character who simply shrugged her shoulders at the criticism for her calls to buy and sell during the dot com craze.

So if an investor is truly savvy, they will find ways to differentiate between the two individual entities when using a search engine to tally and rally behind what is simply noise… and what is credible information in the public realm available for use by someone interested in participating in this form of financing our literal existence from moment to moment.  The total hit count of a particular company’s website does not provide effective counter movement to the sometimes frequently volatile total contribution count to the search engines in the first place.  The more common the company identity is, the greater the spread of risk versus reward ratios when it comes to any of the line items established and acknowledged as credible computations of a company’s fundamental online value, especially those significantly embedded in a variety of cultures.

Therefore, rather than thinking the Exchanges will somehow magically coagulate upon the problem and pull at least something other than a rabbit out of their hats, I thought it would be simpler to point out the following companies who share the label of “Ticker Symbol,” while being listed on other Exchanges, AND MAKE SURE YOU AUDIT YOUR PORTFOLIO IF YOU CHOOSE TO CARRY ANY OF THESE COMPANIES.  This means that before you click the button to complete your transaction, make sure you are purchasing the stock in the company you want to purchase.  Unless there is a severe flaw in the interface design (or a few other points), once you send your transaction, it is your responsibility and subsequent liability, which is why auditing your portfolio for possibly mismatched symbol purchases is so important…especially if you are purchasing through a middleman who is going to make a fee whether you realize it or not…and especially if you are investing in these various mixtures of companies.

This is only a partial list, but it is still a useful reminder for those who perform the various audits on the levels of both contribution and visitation counts when it comes to this “Internet” thing we’ve got, as well as starting point for investors to double-check whether or not they purchased/will purchase stock in the specific organization they wanted to share ownership in:
